Dr. John Hagelin

Quantum physicist and President of Maharishi International University

John Hagelin, Ph.D., is a world-renowned quantum physicist and leading proponent of world peace. He is the president of Maharishi International University (MIU), in Fairfield, Iowa, the home of Consciousness-BasedSM Education and a fully accredited non-profit university offering over 40 undergraduate and graduate programs. Dr. Hagelin is also the national director of Maharishi Foundation USA, the non-profit organization that oversees the teaching of the Transcendental Meditation program in the United States.

Dr. Hagelin is among that elite cadre of physicists contributing to the fulfillment of Einstein’s dream of a “theory of everything” through the mathematical formulation of the unified field, the most advanced scientific knowledge of our time. He has conducted pioneering research at the European Center for Particle Physics (CERN) and Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.

As the author of more than 70 papers published in journals such as Physics Letters, Nuclear Physics, and the Physical Review, Dr. Hagelin’s scientific contributions in the fields of electroweak unification, grand unification, supersymmetry, and cosmology include some of the most cited references in the physical sciences. He is responsible for the development of a highly successful grand unified field theory based on the superstring, featured in a Discover magazine cover story.

Trailblazing work on consciousness and the unified field

Dr. Hagelin’s most innovative work as a physicist has been to develop an expanded theoretical framework that encompasses the field of consciousness. He worked closely for many years with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the TM program, to formulate a scientific understanding of the fundamental relationship of consciousness and the unified field.

Dr. Hagelin was among the first scientists to apply this most advanced knowledge of consciousness and the unified field for the practical benefit of humankind. He has been a forerunner in the use of proven unified field-based technologies derived from the ancient Vedic science of consciousness to reduce stress, improve health and well-being, and promote peace throughout society.

He has published groundbreaking research establishing the existence of long-range “field effects” of consciousness generated through the collective practice of the TM and TM-Sidhi® programs. These revolutionary studies have demonstrated that large meditating groups can effectively defuse acute societal stress and prevent violence and social conflict, thus providing a practical foundation for permanent world peace.

In recognition of his outstanding achievements, Dr. Hagelin was named winner of the prestigious Kilby Award, which honors scientists who have made “major contributions to society through their applied research in the fields of science and technology.” The award cited Dr. Hagelin as “a scientist in the tradition of Einstein, Jeans, Bohr, and Eddington.”

Expert proponent of peace

As a public policy expert, Dr. Hagelin has appeared often on news programs such as ABC’s Nightline and Politically Incorrect, NBC’s Meet the Press, CNN’s Inside Politics, CNBC’s Hardball with Chris Matthews, C-SPAN’s Washington Journal, and others.

He has also been featured in the Washington Post, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, and other leading publications.

Dr. Hagelin received his A.B. in physics summa cum laude from Dartmouth College in 1975, and his Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University in 1981. He is currently director of the Institute of Science, Technology, and Public Policy, a cutting-edge science and technology think tank, and president of the Global Union of Scientists for Peace, an organization of leading scientists from around the world dedicated to ending nuclear proliferation and establishing lasting world peace.
