With 50 years of research at 250 medical schools and research institutions worldwide, and with new studies being published every year, it is well established that twice-daily practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique cultures a higher state of mental and physical health and can improve the quality of life for society as a whole.

More than 800 scientific research studies have been conducted on the TM program

More than 800 scientific research studies on the Transcendental Meditation program—including hundreds published in leading peer-reviewed journals—provide evidence for the effectiveness of the TM technique at reducing stress and improving health. They also demonstrate that TM practice optimizes brain functioning and unfolds higher stages of human development.

In all, this body of research points to a new and expanded framework for understanding consciousness.

No other stress management technique has anywhere close to this amount of hard data in support of its claims to reduce stress. If TM were a new drug, conferring this many scientifically verified benefits, it would be the biggest-selling, multi-billion dollar blockbuster drug on the market. —Norman Rosenthal, M.D., Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, Georgetown University Medical School

The scientific discovery of a fourth state of consciousness

Before scientific research on the TM technique, it was widely accepted that there were just three major states of consciousness naturally experienced: waking, sleep, and dreaming. However, neurophysiological research has repeatedly confirmed that practice of the TM technique brings about a fourth major state of consciousness, a natural state of restful alertness called Transcendental Consciousness.

Research subject practicing the TM technique while his brainwave activity is being monitored

In the 1970s, groundbreaking research on the TM technique was published in Science,1 the American Journal of Physiology, and Scientific American.3 These studies demonstrated that the simple TM technique, easily learned by anyone, allows the physiology to spontaneously experience a unique, fourth state distinct from waking, sleep, and dreaming states.

This state has its own style of physiological functioning and brainwave pattern in 10 parameters: EEG (electroencephalography, measuring brain activity), eye movements, muscle tension, body motility, oxygen consumption, body temperature, cardiac output, blood gases, heart rate, and blood pressure. During TM practice, the body becomes deeply restful—by many measures, deeper than sleep—while brain functioning becomes more coherent and integrated, indicating that the whole brain is awake.

Although this is a recent discovery for modern science, the fourth state of Transcendental Consciousness or pure consciousness has been known and described for thousands of years in the ancient tradition of knowledge from which the TM technique was revived, the Vedic tradition of India—the same tradition that gave us Yoga, Ayurveda, and other practical disciplines.

From the perspective of this ancient knowledge, the fourth state is significant not only for health and but also for full human development.

Higher human development

Regularly experiencing Transcendental Consciousness is the key to developing higher states of consciousness and higher possibilities of human evolution. These higher states are characterized by increased creativity and intelligence, greater emotional resilience, heightened awareness, and elevated well-being. The scientific findings show that these are the very qualities that grow from twice-daily TM practice. (See studies for “Psychology” and “Education” below.)

Perhaps the most important implication of the scientific discovery of the TM program is that anyone’s consciousness can grow, and that growth of consciousness brings higher cognitive function, faster reaction time, better problem solving, and much more. (See brain studies under “Physiology” below.) These potentialities of consciousness unfold not from the outside—such as by processing new information or exercising the brain—but from within our consciousness itself.

The TM technique and its advanced programs, such as the TM-Sidhi® progam, provide ways for our consciousness to settle down and become more expansive. This is an experience of great wholeness of consciousness, which transforms brain functioning and influences the whole physiology. This powerful, holistic effect of transcending on all aspects of human life is a demonstration that consciousness is a fundamental and primary aspect of life.

A new understanding of consciousness

Consciousness is often described as an anomaly in science, or as a mystery or paradox. Some researchers regard consciousness as merely an emergent property of brain functioning, while others argue that it is an illusion and that physical matter is the only reality.

While many neuroscientists, psychologists, and philosophers do not currently agree on what consciousness is or how it came to be, everyone who has learned the TM technique has a tool for directly experiencing the nature of consciousness in and of itself.

Every TM meditator can discover and experience in their own daily lives that consciousness is a reservoir of limitless creativity, intelligence, and happiness. It is our inmost Self and the essence of who we are.
