ABOUT ROY EATON
Roy Eaton is the son of Jamaican immigrants—his father was a mechanic and his mother a governess. He grew up in Harlem and took up classical piano when he was six. Shortly after, in 1937, he played at Carnegie Hall, winning a gold medal in a Music Education League competition.
In 1950, Mr. Eaton won the first Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition Award and made his concert debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1951 and his New York Town Hall debut in 1952.
Mr. Eaton was educated at the City College of New York, the Manhattan School of Music, the University of Zurich, and Yale University, and subsequently became a music instructor at the Manhattan School of Music.
Mr. Eaton served for two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On leaving the Army, he created 75% of all the music produced at the Young & Rubicam ad agency. He also worked almost three decades in advertising with Benton & Bowles and his own company Roy Eaton Music Inc. He was inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame in 2010.
