Tony Spinosa, the developer of the Total Fitness Program for Senior U.S. Military at the National Defense University, will discuss the role of Transcendental Meditation in achieving “Total Fitness.” He will also give insights into how each of us can easily develop our own program to enhance our mental and physical strength and resilience.
ABOUT TONY SPINOSA
Lt. Colonel Anthony Spinosa, United States Army Retired, is an expert in exercise and fitness. During his 18 years as the Director of the Health Fitness Team at National Defense University, in Washington, D.C., Spinosa was responsible for enhancing the executive health and performance of the senior military leaders who were chosen from the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps for NDU’s special one-year program.
Spinosa organized a broad spectrum of interventions that promote healthy lifestyle habits and reduce overall health risks and maximize the performance of each year’s contingent of military leaders. The intent is to help them use the full range of their capacities to thrive in the most difficult circumstances and to emerge from stressful periods stronger, healthier, eager to face the challenges of command.
As director, Spinosa developed a program of Total Fitness of Body, Mind, and Spirit for all students, staff, and faculty at the National Defense University. After exploring various approaches to meditation, Spinosa chose the Transcendental Meditation technique to be included in NDU’s Total Fitness program.
Prior to his work at NDU, Spinosa spent 20 years on active duty in the U.S. Army, holding various staff and command positions worldwide, including Action Officer in the Deputy Chief of Staff, U.S. Army Operation Center.
Spinosa received his Master of Science degree in Exercise Science from George Mason University.
